CAPCOM’S MARVEL-OUS WEEKEND

With the close of Playstation Experience 2016, few can contest Capcom’s sensational showing at the annual conference.  With exciting announcements, plus the crowning of the Street Fighter V champion, Du “NuckleDu” Dang, Capcom was able to captivate its fans throughout the weekend.  Three announcements over the course of two days have set the landscape for an exciting 2017 for fighting game fans.  Let’s take a look first at the more tangible of the announcements, something that you can go out and “touch” right now.

Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Perhaps the most unexpected announcement has to be the reveal of Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3’s release on the PS4.  An Xbox One and PC port have been confirmed for scheduled release in March 2017, but the PS4 version is available now for $24.99 on the Playstation Store.  While some may lambast Capcom for not simply making the game backwards compatible, this release looks like a proper update.

Not simply a port of the original game, UMvsC 3 for the PS4 has been confirmed to play at a silky 1080p/60fps, plus it comes pre-equipped with all DLC from the previous release.  Looking back at the horrid transition Capcom put fans through between Vanilla Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, and Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 less than a year later these are welcome additions.

                AKUMA’S REVIVAL

ANNIHILATION

ANNIHILATION

Perhaps the one accord that everyone expected was Akuma’s announcement for Street Fighter V.  The venerable fighter garnered tons of interest none the less, and the reveal of his new look and move set had crowd’s hollering for joy at the event.  He was also confirmed as the first of Season two’s roster of downloadable characters.  All of this is wrapped in a pre-Christmas release date of 12/20/2016 for $29.99, meaning ‘this guy’ will try to hold out for this Christmas’ Playstation gift-card haul to try some Akuma goodness!

                MARVEL VS CAPCOM FREAKIN’ INFINITE

Speaking of ‘this guy’, the mother of all announcements for me had to be the reveal of a NEW game in the Marvel Vs series, Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite!  Since Disney’s acquisition of Marvel back in 2015, hope had waned in the possibility of a new addition to the series.  Capcom blew the FGC’s minds with the announcement of a reboot/sequel.        Looking like a mash-up of multiple Capcom Vs games, aspects of Marvel Vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, Capcom Vs Tatsunoko, and even Street Fighter X Tekken look to make this a fresh addition to the series.

Trailers showing Marvel pillars Ironman, Captain America, and Captain Marvel (oh Binary, I now heart you!), alongside Capcom juggernauts Ryu, Mega Man, and Morrigan highlighted key aspects of this anticipated game.  Going to a 2 vs 2 system, eliminating assist characters, as well as a revision to MvsC 2’s Infinity Gem mechanic show an already fleshed out game with a bevy of news to trickle down in the future.

Did PSX 2016 make you excited for the future of fighting games?  The answer lies in the comments below!
